Dr. Walter Kimbrough’s career began in student affairs, and he has been recognized for his research and writings on HBCUs and African American men in college. A native of Atlanta, Dr. Walter M. Kimbrough was his high school salutatorian and student body president and went on to earn degrees from the University of Georgia, Miami University in Ohio, and a doctorate in higher education from Georgia State University. He has enjoyed a fulfilling career in student affairs, serving at Emory University, Georgia State University, Old Dominion University, and Albany State University. In October of 2004, at the age of 37, he was named the 12th president of Philander Smith College. In 2012 he became the 7th president of Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and served for ten years. Presently he serves as the Executive VP of Research & Member Engagement for the UNCF.

Dr. Kimbrough has used his influence to be a voice in the community, hosting significant events and advocating for various causes. In 2014, Dillard University hosted a Black Male Summit in response to the Michael Brown killing. He has also championed causes such as advocating for a high school valedictorian and a fourth-grade student facing unjust disciplinary actions. Known as “The Hip Hop Prez,” he is recognized for his effective use of social media, being cited by several organizations as a noteworthy college president on Twitter, and featured in national discussions on free speech on college campuses.

Throughout his career, Dr. Kimbrough has received numerous accolades, including making the Ebony Magazine Power 100 list in 2010, being named HBCU Male President of the Year by HBCU Digest in 2014, and being recognized by TheBestSchools.org as one of the “20 Most Interesting College Presidents” in 2016. An expert in Greek life, he authored “Black Greek 101” and has been an expert witness in hazing cases.
