His finest individual moment came in 1988, when he claimed the league rebounding title with 13 boards per game as a member of the Los Angeles Clippers — a crown he secured in dramatic fashion by hauling down 30 rebounds in the season’s final game, narrowly edging out Charles Oakley for the honor.
Long before his professional career, Cage established himself as one of the premier players in San Diego State history. Selected 14th overall in the 1984 NBA Draft, he remains the Aztecs’ all-time leading rebounder and ranks second in program history in career scoring. A two-time Western Athletic Conference Player of the Year, he earned consensus second-team All-American recognition in 1984.
Since hanging up his playing shoes, Cage has built an equally impressive second act. He serves as a television analyst for Oklahoma City Thunder broadcasts on Fox Sports Oklahoma and has lent his voice and insight to the Memphis Grizzlies, Fox Sports West, Prime Ticket, and Westwood One radio. His coaching résumé is just as notable — leading California powerhouse Mater Dei High School to back-to-back state championships in 2013 and 2014. Off the court, the Michael Cage Foundation continues his commitment to the next generation, connecting young people with academic enrichment and sports programming.
