Kenny Thomas is a former professional basketball player who enjoyed an 11-year career in the NBA, known for his toughness, rebounding, and consistent effort. Born on July 25, 1977, in Atlanta, Georgia, Thomas grew up in Texas and later New Mexico, where he starred at Albuquerque High School. He was named a Parade All-American in 1995 after leading his team to a state title. He played college basketball at the University of New Mexico, becoming one of the most decorated players in school history. During his time with the Lobos (1995-1999), Thomas became the all-time leader in rebounds, blocks, and dunks, and helped lead the team to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. He finished his college career with 1,931 points and over 1,000 rebounds, earning multiple AIl-WAC and All-American honors.

Thomas was selected 22nd overall in the 1999 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets. As a rookie, he quickly established himself as a strong rebounder, leading the team in that category. He later played for the Philadelphia 76ers, where he became a regular double-double threat despite being considered slightly undersized for a power forward at 6’7″. His gritty style of play and relentless hustle earned him the nickname “K9.” In 2005, Thomas was traded to the Sacramento Kings as part of the blockbuster deal that sent Chris Webber to Philadelphia. He remained with the Kings until 2010, continuing to contribute with his physical play and experience. Over the course of his NBA career, Thomas played in 632 games, averaging 9.3 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.

Following his retirement, Thomas has stayed connected to the sport through broadcasting, youth basketball camps, and charitable work, especially in New Mexico and Sacramento. He has also been involved in business and community ventures, including becoming a minority investor in sports teams. In recognition of his accomplishments both on and off the court, he was inducted into the New Mexico Sports Hall of Fame in 2012. Thomas is remembered not only for his strong presence in the paint but also for his leadership, dedication, and commitment to giving back to the communities that supported him throughout his career.
